Description

Two of pop music's most enduring acts joined forces at L.A.'s legendary Greek Theatre for an extraordinary concert event that showcases each band's unique sound. Earth, Wind & Fire belts out such tunes as "Boogie Wonderland," "Jupiter," "Mighty Mighty," and others while Chicago's set includes "Make Me Smile," "Colour My World," "Saturday in the Park," and more. The show also boasts an encore with both groups performing "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is," "Shining Star," "25 or 6 to 4," and more. 92 min. on two discs. Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtrack: English Dolby Digital 5.1.

The '70s and '80s rule as two of the most popular bands from that era join forces on Chicago/Earth Wind & Fire - Live at the Greek Theatre, a two-disc, nearly three-hour concert recorded in Los Angeles in 2004. These groups scored dozens of hits in their heydays, and if neither has come up with much of anything that's new in the past two decades, the sold-out audience at the Greek Theatre could hardly care less. Both Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire, have soldiered on despite key personnel changes over the years (Chicago bassist-singer Peter Cetera and EWF founder Maurice White are long gone, and much missed); here they perform energetic and tasteful versions of everything from "Make Me Smile," "I'm a Man," and "Saturday in the Park" (Chicago) to "That's the Way of the World," "Fantasy," and "Serpentine Fire" (EWF), among many others, to rapturous response. Nothing too exciting about all of that--in fact, it's a bit like witnessing a couple of very skilled tribute bands at work--but there are a few surprises, as when Chicago keyboardist-singer Bill Champlin takes the lead on "After the Love Has Gone" (which he co-wrote) and EWF singer Philip Bailey returns the favor on Chicago's "If You Leave Me Now." The highlights are the first and last portions of the show, when the two bands (complete with horn sections) share the stage for "September," "25 or 6 to 4," "Shining Star," and more, displaying genuine joy at performing together and generating a huge, infectious sound delivered with high definition visuals and digital audio. --Sam Graham

Description

When Harry Belafonte released Calypso, with its memorable songs "Day-O", "I Do Adore Her", and "Jamaica Farewell" sung in his personable, warm voice, it quickly became a bestseller. Like any good folk music, the songs are accessible, yet they also bear the exotic lure of the Caribbean. From the songs of hard work, such as "Day-O" and "Hosanna," to the sly good humor of "Man Smart (Woman Smarter)" and "The Jackass Song," Belafonte's voice helped bring the richness of Caribbean culture to the North American consciousness. While a couple of the songs here are featured in arrangements that may sound a bit corny to modern ears, most sound delightfully fresh and have definitely stood the test of time. --Jeff Grubb

Description

This capable and intelligent adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic novel is one in a long line of Great Expectations put to film. But this two-part drama distinguishes itself with its faithfulness to the book and outstanding performances by the principal cast. Ioan Gruffudd plays the adult Pip, an orphan who lives with his sister and her kindly blacksmith husband. Pip's life changes when he is sent for by Miss Haversham (Charlotte Rampling), an eccentric and wealthy spinster who wears only her bridal gown, which she was wearing when she was left at the altar years before. Introduced to Estella (played later as a woman by Justine Waddell), Miss Haversham's contemptuous ward, Pip falls in love with the girl and spends the remainder of his youth attempting to be good enough for her--a state of affairs that suddenly seems possible when a mysterious benefactor makes Pip's education as a London gentleman possible. Gruffudd is a fine choice for the central character, and his naturally intense expression underscores Pip's problems with insecurity and sense of deservedness. Waddell is an appropriately solipsistic Estella, slightly reminiscent of Vivien Leigh, and Rampling's casting is an unexpected but terrific move on the filmmaker's part. The veteran actress's career-long air of mystery, vague suffering, and intense sexuality bring a potent power to Miss Haversham's baleful looks. Dickens would be proud of this one. --Tom Keogh

Description

Athens and five other cities of ancient Greece are brought back to life for an hour in this installment of the Great Cities of the Ancient World series. Beginning with a lovely shot of the sunrise behind the Acropolis, the program looks at early achievements in architecture, philosophy, sport, theater, and democracy that composed the dawn of modern civilization. As narrator Edmund Purdon points out, it's ironic that when we think of ancient Greece we picture austere white marble, when in fact the Greeks led such colorful lives. Thanks to computer graphics that "rebuild" ruined temples and amphitheaters in vivid shades of red, blue, yellow, and gold, the viewer can get a glimpse of these glorious structures as the Greeks knew them. Purdon intersperses myths and historical facts with the trivial details of daily life, so the viewer learns not only about the 12 labors of Hercules but also about what the average citizen might have purchased in the Agora (marketplace). From the mysterious Oracle at Delphi, to the birthplace of the Olympic Games, to the prostitution and slave markets of Corinth, this video provides a well-rounded introduction to the colorful complexity of Hellenic culture. --Larisa Lomacky Moore

Description

Agamemnon is the first play of the Oresteia--the oldest surviving classical tragedy and universally accepted as a masterpiece. The play opens as the Watchman at King Agamemnon's palace sees a beacon that announces the fall of Troy. The Chorus of Old Men tell the background to the story of the Trojan War. When Agamemnon returns home after a 10-year absence, his queen, Clytemnestra, welcomes him but Cassandra (daughter of the vanquished Trojan King Priam and now Agamemnon's captive mistress) foretells his murder. The murder of Agamemnon will be a double revenge: Clytemnestra will avenge her daughter Iphigenia, sacrificed by Agamemnon to secure a favorable wind toward Troy; and Aegisthus, Clytemnestra's lover, will avenge the murder of his brothers by Agamemnon's father. This is the origin of the blood feud that runs through Agamemnon, Choephori, and Eumenides.

  • From the Series Aeschylus: The Oresteia
  • 90 minutes, in color
  • Performed in the tradition of masked players
  • The chorus plays a major role, in which at some point all the actors play a part
  • Directed by Peter Hall
