Great Expectations [VHS]
Sale Price: $75.00 |
DescriptionThis capable and intelligent adaptation of Charles Dickens's classic novel is one in a long line of Great Expectations put to film. But this two-part drama distinguishes itself with its faithfulness to the book and outstanding performances by the principal cast. Ioan Gruffudd plays the adult Pip, an orphan who lives with his sister and her kindly blacksmith husband. Pip's life changes when he is sent for by Miss Haversham (Charlotte Rampling), an eccentric and wealthy spinster who wears only her bridal gown, which she was wearing when she was left at the altar years before. Introduced to Estella (played later as a woman by Justine Waddell), Miss Haversham's contemptuous ward, Pip falls in love with the girl and spends the remainder of his youth attempting to be good enough for her--a state of affairs that suddenly seems possible when a mysterious benefactor makes Pip's education as a London gentleman possible. Gruffudd is a fine choice for the central character, and his naturally intense expression underscores Pip's problems with insecurity and sense of deservedness. Waddell is an appropriately solipsistic Estella, slightly reminiscent of Vivien Leigh, and Rampling's casting is an unexpected but terrific move on the filmmaker's part. The veteran actress's career-long air of mystery, vague suffering, and intense sexuality bring a potent power to Miss Haversham's baleful looks. Dickens would be proud of this one. --Tom Keogh |

Great Cities of the Ancient World - Athens & Ancient Greece [VHS]
List Price: |
DescriptionAthens and five other cities of ancient Greece are brought back to life for an hour in this installment of the Great Cities of the Ancient World series. Beginning with a lovely shot of the sunrise behind the Acropolis, the program looks at early achievements in architecture, philosophy, sport, theater, and democracy that composed the dawn of modern civilization. As narrator Edmund Purdon points out, it's ironic that when we think of ancient Greece we picture austere white marble, when in fact the Greeks led such colorful lives. Thanks to computer graphics that "rebuild" ruined temples and amphitheaters in vivid shades of red, blue, yellow, and gold, the viewer can get a glimpse of these glorious structures as the Greeks knew them. Purdon intersperses myths and historical facts with the trivial details of daily life, so the viewer learns not only about the 12 labors of Hercules but also about what the average citizen might have purchased in the Agora (marketplace). From the mysterious Oracle at Delphi, to the birthplace of the Olympic Games, to the prostitution and slave markets of Corinth, this video provides a well-rounded introduction to the colorful complexity of Hellenic culture. --Larisa Lomacky Moore |

Agamemnon - National Theatre of Great Britain |
DescriptionAgamemnon is the first play of the Oresteia--the oldest surviving classical tragedy and universally accepted as a masterpiece. The play opens as the Watchman at King Agamemnon's palace sees a beacon that announces the fall of Troy. The Chorus of Old Men tell the background to the story of the Trojan War. When Agamemnon returns home after a 10-year absence, his queen, Clytemnestra, welcomes him but Cassandra (daughter of the vanquished Trojan King Priam and now Agamemnon's captive mistress) foretells his murder. The murder of Agamemnon will be a double revenge: Clytemnestra will avenge her daughter Iphigenia, sacrificed by Agamemnon to secure a favorable wind toward Troy; and Aegisthus, Clytemnestra's lover, will avenge the murder of his brothers by Agamemnon's father. This is the origin of the blood feud that runs through Agamemnon, Choephori, and Eumenides. Features

My Big Fat Greek Wedding
List Price: |
DescriptionFeel-good sleeper sensation stars Nia Vardalos (who also adapted her one-woman play) as a Chicago-based woman who works at parents Michael Constantine and Lainie Kazan's Greek restaurant, but longs for romance and a life for herself. After taking computer classes, she gets a job at her aunt's travel agency, where she meets and falls for personable teacher John Corbett, who must now come under her family's scrutiny. With Andrea Martin, Joey Fatone, Gia Carides. 95 min. Standard and Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, Greek, Spanish, French; audio commentary by Vardalos, Corbett; biographies. It's not surprising that My Big Fat Greek Wedding grew more popular over the course of its theatrical release (whereas most blockbusters open big and then drop precipitously)--not only does it have believable situations and engaging characters, but these characters (particularly our romantic heroine, Toula, played by writer and performer Nia Vardalos) look like actual human beings instead of plastic movie stars. The result is the very accessible tale of Greek-American Toula (whose family sees her as over the hill at 30), who falls for a WASPy guy named Ian (John Corbett) and then has to endure the outrage, doubt, and ultimate acceptance of her deeply ethnically centered family. The actors invest their wildly stereotypical portrayals with sincerity and compassion, giving the movie an honest warmth instead of Hollywood schmaltz. But My Big Fat Greek Wedding ultimately succeeds because of Vardalos; her intelligent, down-to-earth presence and charm carry the film. --Bret Fetzer Features
