Description

"I enjoyed these essays on royalty, which range widely from the beauty of Queens to court dwarfs and royal circumcision. Readers will find an impressively wide span of history enjoyably investigated." – Hugo VickersHugo Vickers, author of “Behind Closed Doors: The Tragic, Untold Story of The Duchess of Windsor,” is a writer and broadcaster who has written biographies of many twentieth century figures. This is not your typical royal history book. The table of contents reads more like a menu at a good restaurant, where there’s something for everyone’s taste. Each of the 18 chapters tells a unique story about an overlooked or unusual aspect of royal history, spanning centuries and countries, but in no particular order. From first to last, they will take you on a journey through royal history you’ve probably never seen or thought of before. In few – if any – other books will you find the British Monarchy compared to London’s sewer system, or read of the challenges of finding a suitable husband for a 200-plus pound Victorian princess who was nonetheless a “remarkably light dancer.” Rarely are the lives of historic and modern royals from Queen Victoria and Catherine the Great to Prince Charles and Crown Prince Frederick of Denmark “illustrated” not by paintings but by tattoos. Even more intimate topics, like the practice of circumcision among royals – including Princes William and Harry – are explored for the sake of inquiring minds. Chances are, even readers who usually find historic royalty boring and stuffy or modern royalty anachronistic and detached will find something to enjoy. Who wouldn’t feel a bit satisfied reading about a celebrated 19th century courtesan being paid to steal the thunder of an old and frumpy queen just to prove that queens are expected to be beautiful? It can also be quite amusing to find that a supposedly formal portrait of the current British Royal Family holds hidden, enigmatic clues to family dynamics and individual personalities that amuse and baffle. In short (much like the Court dwarfs you’ll read about), this book will leave you with a sense that you not only know royal history – and enjoy it – but that you have also journeyed through it and know the royals personally, from who exterminates their palaces right down to their infamous last words.

Description

An Unusual Journey Through Royal History, Volume IIIn the second volume of her Kindle best-selling eBook, An Unusual Journey Through Royal History, Victoria Martínez invites readers on an even broader journey through history and around the world to explore overlooked and uncommon aspects of royalty. In her dual quest to gratify history lovers and royal watchers and to make converts out of those who usually find history boring or stuffy, Victoria combines her skill for historical research with a writing style peppered with equal parts of wisdom and wit. In addition to the countries one would expect to find in a book about historic royalty, like Britain and France, Victoria takes readers to lesser known monarchies such as: Württemberg, where they’ll meet the corpulent ruling family of the German Grand Duchy of Württemberg; Bohemia, where the descendents of “Good King Wenceslas” ruled for centuries; and Hawaii, with its surfing Victorian princess. In other chapters, readers will go inside palace doors to experience what life was like for the sisters and daughters of “Mad King George,” experience the inner workings of a royal wedding, learn what it’s like to receive gifts like a royal, and live the life of the British queen who liked other people’s things a little too much. As with Volume I of “An Unusual Journey Through Royal History,” each of the 14 chapters of Volume II tells a unique story that will leave readers with a sense that they not only know royal history – and enjoy it – but have also journeyed through it and met the royals personally.“In her third collection of articles, Tori Martínez again turns her lively style and humour to royal topics, bringing many obscure facts to her readers’ attention with her usual erudite irreverence. From Princess Margaret to George III’s cloistered offspring, a plethora of royal ladies and other royal topics emerge from these pages in new lights, to entertain Tori’s regular readers and introduce her to new ones.” – Janet Ashton, author of "The German Woman" and co-author of "The Grand Dukes"

From Nero's nagging mother (whom he found especially annoying after taking her as his lover) to Catherine's stable of studs (not of the equine variety), here is a wickedly delightful look at the most scandalous royal doings you never learned about in history class. Gleeful, naughty, sometimes perverted-like so many of the crowned heads themselves-A Treasury of Royal Scandals presents the best (the worst?) of royal misbehavior through the ages. From ancient Rome to Edwardian England, from the lavish rooms of Versailles to the dankest corners of the Bastille, the great royals of Europe have excelled at savage parenting, deadly rivalry, pathological lust, and meeting death with the utmost indignity-or just very bad luck.

Description

Samuel Peralta "Sammy" Sosa (born November 12, 1968) is a former Dominican Republic Major League Baseball right fielder.

Sosa's Major League career began with the Texas Rangers in 1989. After a stint with the Chicago White Sox, Sosa became a member of the Chicago Cubs in 1992 and subsequently became one of the league's best hitters. In 1998, Sosa and Mark McGwire achieved national fame for their home run-hitting prowess in pursuit of Roger Maris' home run record. Sosa finished his career with brief stints with the Baltimore Orioles and the Texas Rangers. With the Rangers, Sosa hit his 600th career home run to become the fifth player in MLB history to reach the milestone. He is also the all-time home run leader among foreign-born MLB players. Furthermore, Sosa is one of only two National League Players to ever reach 160 RBI, a milestone he reached in 2001. The other was Cubs player and RBI Champion Hack Wilson during his record setting 1930 season in which he hit 191 RBI. Sosa is the only player to have hit 60 or more home runs in a single season three times.

Description

Royal Doulton announces the international launch of the 100 Years of Royal Albert collection, celebrating a century of English craftsmanship through ten patterns representing design trends of each decade of the 20th century. Royal Albert’s success dates back to the late 1800’s, and the new collection celebrates the brand’s vitality, longevity and rich design history. The collection features all bone china with 22 karat gold accents on teacups, saucers, plates, mugs, teapots, creamers, sugar bowls and figurines. Every pattern included in the collection captures the true historical design statements and trends of each time period. Featuring Royal Albert brand signature delicate florals in many of the patterns, all items from the 100 Years of Royal Albert collection are packaged in unique deep pink and burgundy Royal Albert hatboxes with illustrations of all ten patterns.

As it embarks on a new century of fine china design, Royal Albert honors the artistic achievements of the one it has so faithfully chronicled with this stunning 100 Years of Royal Albert tribute collection. Employing classic shapes and delicate floral motifs, the 10-part series, which includes teaware, figurines, and brooches, recalls major British historical events and style trends from each decade of the 21st century. Inspiration for the series came from previous Royal Albert designs and its archive pattern books. This 10-piece teacup and saucer set includes the patterns from 1900 to 1940. Crafted of bone china with lustrous 22-karat gold trim, the five pairs all share the same shape for a highly coordinated look at the table while showcasing the special beauty of each decade's design. For instance, set the dark, ornate 1910 Duchess next to the simple, fresh 1930 Polka Rose for an unexpected combination that delights the senses. Royal Albert's signature roses provide a common theme that ties the styles together. Each piece has a commemorative backstamp, and the set comes packaged in a presentation-style pink and burgundy hatbox with illustrations of all the patterns. The china is dishwasher-safe and carries a two-year warranty. --Kara Karll
