Volume 6 bundles together 1997's holidays specials, "Mr. Hankey, the Christmas Poo" and "Tom's Rhinoplasty." Outside of the usual mocking social commentary and piercing wit from writers Parker and Stone, viewers will find some great musical performances in the "Mr. Hankey" episode: Kyle's "I'm a Lonely Jew on Christmas" lament; Mr. Hankey's "Howdy-Ho;" Chef's original, yuletide song (as only Chef can do); Cartman's "Kyle's Mom Is a Bitch;" and the finale chorus of the "Mr. Hankey" theme. While the town works to put on a "nondenominational, nonoffensive" school play, Kyle tries to convince family and friends that yes, indeed, the Christmas turd in a red Santa hat that sang and danced in his bathroom is real. The "Mr. Hankey" episode contains the debut of the hilariously true-to-life "um-kay" school counselor, Mr. Macki--who after talking with Kyle about his delusions of a poo, calls him "a twisted, little monkey." Also, included is the unforgettably sick and repulsively funny Mr. Hankey play-kit commercial. Of course, in the end, after all is parodied and sung, people come together in the name of, um, the holidays, I guess. If "Mr. Hankey" is the South Park musical, then "Tom's Rhinoplasty" is the vomiting special (e.g., Mr. Garrison and Stan). Teacher Mr. Garrison takes a leave of absence to have plastic surgery (which turns his face into the cut-out of David Hasselhoff's--a bizarre effect difficult to watch at first) while the good looks of his substitute, Ms. Ellen, sends the boys reeling into lovey-dovey land. As they compete to woo Ms. Ellen during Valentine's Day season (Cartman: "I'm gonna buy her a vacuum cleaner; chicks love vacuum cleaners…."), Wendy Testaburger's jealousy festers and grows into an explosively funny climax (due in part to the twists on Ms. Ellen's character). Volume 6 is not to be missed... except by your children, of course. --Karen Karleski

They might be expendable, but they sure are durable: The Expendables is crammed with well-traveled action heroes, called to a summit meeting here to capture some of that good old ultraviolent '80s-movie feel. Star-director Sylvester Stallone rides herd as the leader of this mercenary band, which includes Jason Statham, Jet Li, and Stallone's old Rocky V nemesis Dolph Lundgren. Mickey Rourke, looking like a car wreck on Highway 61, plays the tattoo artist who communicates the gang's assignments to Stallone; throw in Terry Crews and Ultimate Fighting champ Randy Couture, and you've got a badass crew indeed. The specifics here involve a Latin American island where US interests have mucked up the local politics beyond repair--but when Sly's eye is caught by the feisty daughter (Giselle Itie) of the local military jefe, a simple job gets complicated. Adding to the B-movie flavor of the enterprise, we've got Eric Roberts and Steve Austin bouncing around as badder-than-the-bad guys, plus Bruce Willis popping in for a one-scene bit, and… well, perhaps another unbilled cameo. The violence doesn't reach the frantic pace of Stallone's last Rambo picture, but it builds to a pretty crazy crescendo in the final reels, during which each cast member gets to show his stuff. Although Stallone's face looks younger than it did in the first Rocky movie, his line delivery is more sluggish than ever, and what lines! The dialogue is stuck in the '80s, too. Although it's pretty ham-handed throughout, The Expendables is likely critic-proof: the audience that wants to see this kind of body-slamming throwdown isn't going to care about the niceties. Since its 1994 debut, Disney's animated series Gargoyles has attracted a sophisticated viewership for its unusually thoughtful storyline, mature characters, literary allusions (Arthurian lore, Shakespeare), and parade of celebrity voiceovers. Part Gothic fantasy and part contemporary urban drama, Gargoyles begins with a brutal, 10th-century battle over a Scottish castle, which is guarded at night by winged gargoyles who become flesh in the dark (but who return to stone by day). Under the leadership of Goliath (Keith David), the gargoyles ward off an attack by Vikings, yet are met with disdain by those they protect, including a princess and her advisors. Such is the gargoyles' lot until they are betrayed by a friend and turned to stone for a thousand years. Rescued by a billionaire named Xanatos (Jonathan Frakes)--who breaks the spell by purchasing the castle and relocating it atop his Manhattan skyscraper--Goliath and his friends slowly adapt to the modern world and figure out whom they can trust. In a moving season finale, they adopt New York City as the home they vow to protect. With a certain urgency in every episode, tangled relationships between Goliath and his several allies and enemies (as well as characters who belong somewhere between), and a vocal cast full of Star Trek types (Michael Dorn, Nichelle Nichols, Marina Sirtis, among others), Gargoyles has great appeal to thinking viewers of any age. Whether WrestleMania XIX goes down as the best WrestleMania ever will be for historians to decide, but the 2003 battle in Seattle certainly was notable for two of the biggest grudge matches to hit the WWE in many a moon. Billed as "20 years in the making," WWE mogul Mr. McMahon tried to put an end to Hulkamania in a street fight against the legenday Hogan. Despite all the accolades, the championship belts, and the movie career, one thing the Rock had never done is beat prodigal son Stone Cold Steve Austin at WrestleMania, and he was ready to pull out all the stops--including an unprecedented three Rock Bottoms--to do it. For all the hype, however, don't ignore the other events of the evening. For example, there was the actual WWE Championship to be decided, and Kurt Angle tried to prove he doesn't suck by taking on Brock Lesnar, and the loser headed straight from the ring to the hospital.
